Last year saw remote interviewing go from a novelty to a necessity, with the requirements of social distancing. Gradually, more face-to-face interactions will take place this year, however the online experience is here to stay. Here are our essential tips for successful remote interviews.
Location set up- chose a well-lit, plain background in a quiet space. First impressions count even in the virtual world. Avoid distraction or any interference during the allocated interview time.
Use a fixed Computer– rather than a laptop or mobile. You are more likely to get a steady image and less break up.
Check up your set up– install the interviewers preferred software platform, (Zoom, Microsoft Teams). Have a dry run to test the audio, and functionality of the platform if it’s not familiar to you. Check your Wifi connections.
Dress smart- wear the appropriate clothing. The recruiter can advise, but in most cases normal smart business attire will still be the protocol.
Preparation is the key- Online interviews are the same as any other interview. Prepare well. Research the company, have relevant questions about the job specification. Understand your own CV and have a copy in front of you. The online experience does have some advantages, it allows you to have easily accessible prompts, be it questions or notes.
Speak clearly– virtual interviews do mean there can be delays or technical issues. Speak clearly and slower, do not panic if a technical issue happens. It could be the ice breaker that makes for a positive meeting, and potentially securing that dream job.
